When did your infant begin to coo?

My first started cooing super early and was making LOTS of sounds very early, probably around the time he started smiling at 6 weeks.

My second baby is 8 weeks today, and I’ve only heard him coo maybe a handful of times.

I know it’s wrong to compare two babies, but here I am, stressing…

Typically, babies start cooing around 2 months old, but it can happen sooner or later. Talking to your baby from birth encourages their cooing and language development. Babies learn to communicate by listening to you, even before they can speak.

My 7 week old is cooing, but not laughing. She has only just started smiling. She only started cooing in the last 2 weeks.

My little one started cooing around the third month. I remember those early mornings when she would lie there, looking up at me with those big curious eyes and making these adorable little sounds. It was like she was trying to communicate even before she could form words. I can guarantee you, it melts your heart every time. Every baby is different, though.

Parentguru, thanks for the information! Though it can vary, it’s useful to know that babies often begin cooing around two months of age. Engaging in conversation with your newborn is an excellent method to promote their language development.
