I’m thinking about getting a playpen to keep my baby safe when she starts crawling. She’s only 4 months old, but I think she might start moving around soon. When I was pregnant, I considered playpens but decided they weren’t necessary since a playard seemed like it would do the same thing, just in a smaller space. Now, though, I’m finding it hard to keep my dog away from her and her toys. My dog is gentle, but I still worry about accidents. I like the idea of having a safe space where I can leave my baby for a moment without worrying. Maybe a pack n play would work, but I’m wondering if anyone has other suggestions or insights. Thanks!
A playpen or pack 'n play can indeed provide a safe and confined space for your baby to play in while keeping your dog at a distance. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:
- Size and Portability: Playpens come in various sizes and designs, so consider the space you have available at home and whether you’ll need to move the playpen around frequently. Pack 'n plays are typically more portable and compact, making them easy to set up and transport.
- Safety Features: Look for playpens with sturdy construction, secure locking mechanisms, and breathable mesh sides to ensure your baby’s safety. Make sure there are no sharp edges or protruding parts that could pose a risk to your baby.
- Versatility: Some playpens come with additional features like built-in changing tables, bassinets, or mobiles, which can be convenient if you’re looking for multifunctional baby gear.
for me
Some experts believe that playpens can limit children’s movement and have been overused in the past. However, depending on your home’s layout or specific circumstances, you might occasionally need a safe place to put your baby for a short time. In such cases, a playpen can be very helpful.
Hi Barbara… A playpen or a pack n play can indeed provide a safe space for your baby to play while keeping your dog at a distance. Another option you might consider is setting up baby gates in certain areas of your home to create a designated play area. This allows your baby to have more space to move around while still being contained in a safe environment.
Additionally, always supervise your baby and dog when they are together to ensure their safety.
We own both a pack 'n play and a playpen, and I must say, it’s been the most worthwhile purchase. It wasn’t primarily for our dog; rather, it was because our little one is endlessly curious and into everything! While the pack 'n play felt a bit restrictive in terms of space, opting for a larger square playpen was a game-changer. It provides our LO with ample room to crawl, walk, and play with toys. Having a designated safe area where I can place him down, whether I need a few minutes to attend to other tasks or just need a breather, has been a real lifesaver.
