My twins were born on Monday, 9/6, and the severe swelling in my legs and feet has not improved at all. It seems worse now than when I was pregnant, which I didn’t think was possible.
For those who experienced this, how long did it last after giving birth? I didn’t have a c-section, so I’m not sure if that makes a difference.
Are there any remedies to help reduce the swelling faster? Also, could there be any long-term damage, like stretch marks or otherwise?
My legs feel like they might burst! Thanks in advance for any advice!
Congratulations on the birth of your twins! Postpartum edema, or swelling, is quite common and can be frustrating. It usually peaks around the first week after delivery and should gradually improve over the next week or so. However, it can sometimes take a bit longer for the swelling to fully subside.
Here are some remedies that might help reduce the swelling faster:
Elevate your feet: Whenever you have a chance to lie down, elevate your feet above the level of your heart.
Stay hydrated: Drinking more water can help your body release excess fluid.
Use the bathroom frequently: This helps your body get rid of extra fluid.
Keep moving: Light exercise, like walking, can improve blood circulation.
Wear compression stockings: These can help prevent fluid from pooling in your feet and ankles.
Limit salt intake: Too much salt can cause your body to retain fluid.
Cold compresses: Applying cold compresses can help reduce swelling.
Postpartum swelling, especially in the legs and feet, is common as your body sheds excess fluid. It can take up to two weeks to improve. Remedies include:
Elevating your legs.
Wearing compression socks.
Staying hydrated.
Gentle movement or walking.
Call your doctor if one leg is more swollen than the other. Long-term effects like stretch marks are possible, but usually, swelling doesn’t cause permanent damage.
