My wife and I are expecting our first baby in September, and we’re having a hard time putting together our registry because of all the mixed reviews out there.
What do you use for your baby in the car? I initially thought a mirror would be sufficient, but my wife is concerned about visibility at night and saw a video where the sun’s reflection off the mirror actually burned a hole in a car seat. Because of her concerns, she’s leaning towards a camera system. I’m worried that might be overkill and could be more distracting than useful. I’m also unsure about the reliability of such systems and don’t want to deal with technical issues. Plus, I have this nagging thought that a camera/monitor might make our car more attractive to thieves if we park in a downtown area—though I admit that’s probably just me trying to justify sticking with the mirror.
I had a mirror till the exact moment the sun struck it, scorching a fucking hole in the vehicle seat cover. As in, what if my child’s skin had been that? Was crazy to see! So now we have camera folks. Not annoying because you can easily switch the display on and off as needed to check. Ours is a simple push-on/push-off device that plugs directly into what I refer to as the cigarette lighter component.
A mirror is here. In the event that it breaks loose, as it might in an accident or sudden stop, it is meant to be safer to have it linked to the middle seat headrest than to have it directly in front of the infant. We now have two rear-facing, and it’s good that the circular mirror lets us view both of them.
About two years ago, when I created my register, I had no idea that cameras even existed. I’ve never tried it, so it could seem excessive, but who knows. If we can’t see them at night, we just switch on the automobile light for a brief while.
