At my baby’s 4-month checkup, they asked if he can roll from his belly to his back. He tries but hasn’t fully done it yet, and he is 4.5 months old. He also attempts to roll from back to belly. We don’t do a lot of tummy time, so I’m concerned if he should already be able to do this. Am I not doing enough?
Hello
rolling 4mos, sitting 6mos, crawling 9mos
Rolling over usually occurs between 4 and 6 months of age, but it can occur sooner or later. Since each baby develops at their own rate, you should not be concerned if your 4-month-old baby is not rolling over quite yet.
Hi…Babies start to roll over between 4 to 6 months of age. This milestone can vary, with some rolling earlier or later, depending on their development
Rolling Development: Most infants begin rolling from belly to back between 4 and 7 months of age. Some may achieve this milestone a bit earlier or later, which is perfectly normal. At 4.5 months, your baby’s attempts to roll indicate positive muscle development and coordination progress.
Importance of Tummy Time: Tummy time plays a crucial role in strengthening neck and back muscles, essential for rolling and other milestones like crawling. Increasing tummy time sessions can support earlier rolling achievement.
Here are some recommendations:
- Increase Tummy Time: Begin with short sessions on a soft surface and gradually extend the time as your baby becomes more comfortable. Make tummy time engaging with colorful toys or by placing a mirror within reach.
- Consult Your Pediatrician: Bring up your concerns about rolling at your baby’s next checkup. The pediatrician can evaluate overall development and milestones, addressing any specific worries. They can also provide advice on increasing tummy time and other activities to promote rolling skills.
- Focus on Progress: Celebrate your baby’s attempts to roll and recognize each step of progress. Remember, every infant develops at their unique pace, so continue to encourage and support your baby’s development journey.
Josie, my son started rolling in both directions a week before turning 5 months old, but did not do so consistently until around 5.5 months.
