Newborn’s skin is dry / peeling. Baby is 7 days old, and this started today. What can I do?
If your newborn has dry skin, here are some gentle ways to deal with it:
- Use Gentle Products
Opt for mild, fragrance-free baby cleansers and moisturizers specifically designed for newborns.
- Limit Bath Time
Keep baths short (around 5-10 minutes) and use lukewarm water instead of hot water, which can further dry out the skin.
- Moisturize Regularly
Apply a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free baby moisturizer immediately after bath time to lock in moisture.
- Choose Soft Fabrics
Dress your baby in soft, breathable fabrics like cotton to avoid further irritation.
- Humidify the Air
Use a cool-mist humidifier in your baby’s room to add moisture to the air, especially during dry winter months.
- Avoid Harsh Products
Steer clear of harsh soaps, perfumed lotions, and laundry detergents that can exacerbate dryness and irritation.
- Consult Your Pediatrician
If dryness persists or is accompanied by redness, itching, or cracking, consult your pediatrician for further evaluation and advice.
Dry skin conditions are prevalent among babies and typically resolve on their own. However, in some cases, they may persist and require attention. Baby dry skin can stem from various factors, including genetics, the baby’s age, or allergic reactions.
@Ronald. I agree with you. Dry skin conditions are common in babies and often, dry skin on your baby will clear up on its own. Sometimes though, it can cause an ongoing problem.
