My little guy, Leo, is just about 6 months old now, and I’m starting to think about introducing solids. I tried giving him some rice cereal mixed with breastmilk a couple of days ago, but let’s just say it was an experience. He scrunched up his nose, poked his tongue out, and ended up with more on his face than in his mouth. It was adorable, but I also realized I might need some help. I never used baby food with my niece or nephew, and things seem to have changed a bit. Are there certain foods that are better to start with than others? Any tips on making this a less messy (and hilarious) process?

It can be exciting to introduce solid foods to your kid! Start with easy-to-digest purees, such as sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, or apples. Try iron-fortified grains such as barley or oats as well. Bananas and avocados are other excellent options. When your baby is not very hungry or full, introduce foods to them. Start with smooth, watery purees and gradually thicken them as time goes on.
