FTM 19+2. While perusing baby monitors, I came across the monitoring sock. While it seems like a neat device, is the cost justified? Are there any better options to calm our fears about breathing monitoring?
The instructor of my birthing class had advised me not to have it. It is ultimately unnecessary and has resulted in a few false alarms. I also did one where I mentioned it went against the guidelines for safe sleep.
For the price, I wouldn’t purchase it.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! The monitoring sock, like the Owlet Smart Sock, is indeed a neat device that tracks your baby’s oxygen levels and heart rate. While some parents find it very reassuring, the cost can be quite high. Whether it’s justified depends on your comfort level and budget. Alternatives include audio/video monitors with movement sensors like the Babysense 7 or the Snuza Hero, which are generally more affordable. Another option is the Nanit Pro camera, which monitors sleep and breathing without direct contact. Remember, while these devices can provide peace of mind, they are not substitutes for safe sleep practices and regular check-ins.
Do not buy an owlet sock
I bought one for about $400, and it was the worst product I’ve ever owned. The sensor didn’t fit well on my baby’s small foot, and the loud warning sound would go off every time the sock moved slightly. It was terrible, especially since you’re not supposed to wake a sleeping baby. I got so frustrated that I ripped it off and threw it across the room.
The worst part is that the company uses fear tactics and false advertising that could harm babies. They tell scary stories about SIDS and claim their sock can help a 6-week-old sleep through the night, which is bad because babies need to eat every 2-3 hours. I wish I could report this company.
They’re awful. No wonder they have so many lawsuits in the US. I hope Health Canada bans their products.
All in all, even if we adore the convenience and tranquility it provides, the equipment is too costly to use for a year or less. You should anticipate having to purchase a new one for every child if you intend to have more than one. We are not alone because similar experiences have been mentioned in other evaluations.
