I can’t get my newborn to poop, any suggestions?

My newborn is exclusively breastfed and hasn’t pooped in 3 days. He’s usually a multiple-poops-a-day baby, so this is unusual for him. He’s been gassy and seems very uncomfortable. The bicycle leg trick isn’t helping and seems to make him more upset. We’ve tried warm baths with no success.

Does anyone have any other tricks that might help?

I have called the nurse line and we’ll go in tomorrow if he’s still uncomfortable.

I’m just trying everything I can until then.

My little one went through a no-poop phase too. A few things that worked for us: try gently massaging his tummy in a circular motion, or even a little tummy time to get things moving. Sometimes a warm compress on his belly can help, too. Hang in there… It’s great you’ve got a plan with the nurse line, and I’m sure he’ll be back to his usual self soon.

Increase your fluid intake to ensure your infant receives enough. Between feedings, you can give the infant a small amount of water or more breastmilk or formula.

If your newborn is having trouble pooping, here are a few suggestions:

  1. Feeding: Ensure your baby is feeding well. Sometimes, a lack of proper feeding can affect bowel movements.
  2. Tummy Time: Gently massage your baby’s tummy and do tummy time to help stimulate their digestion.
  3. Bicycling Legs: Move your baby’s legs in a bicycling motion to help relieve constipation.
  4. Warm Bath: A warm bath can help relax your baby’s muscles and encourage bowel movements.
  5. Check Formula: If you’re formula-feeding, consider if a change in formula might be needed.
  6. Hydration: Ensure your baby is getting enough fluids if they’re older than a few weeks.

If these methods don’t help or if you’re concerned about your baby’s bowel movements, consult your pediatrician for advice.
