Hi parents…
I’m a new parent to a one-month-old baby and I’m curious about their sleep patterns. How long should a 1-month-old typically sleep in a day? I’ve heard different opinions and would love some guidance from experienced parents or experts.

Honestly, don’t stress too much about establishing a sleep schedule at this early stage. At just one month old, it’s quite normal for infants to have irregular sleep patterns as they adjust to life outside the womb.
Around three months old, the baby may start developing more predictable sleep patterns, making it a better time to work on a consistent sleep routine.
Newborns don’t follow routines at first, they live in three-hour cycles of feeding, burping, pooping, changing and napping, with no clear distinction between day and night.
Wow, this is an interesting question.
They don’t need much, honestly. Just to be safe, feel cared for, and exist.
During the first six months of my maternity leave, when he wasn’t feeding or sleeping, I often put him in a chest carrier and walked around playing Pokémon Go or listening to audiobooks. The sunshine and physical activity were great for both of us. Sometimes I’d dance with him or do household chores while carrying him.
My baby also had a variety of spots to relax in, like Boppies, Rock-n-Plays, Cocoonababy, swings, or playmats with overhead mobiles. While he chilled out, I watched the first couple of seasons of Gilmore Girls in the background.
Some might judge me for having the TV on, but the idea that a parent should be an all-singing, all-dancing, 24-hour entertainer is unreasonable, especially at that age.
You’re doing fine. Trust your instincts, you’ve got this.
