Our LO turns 1 in a few months, we’re planning a day trip 3 hours out of town to go to a zoo, as he LOVES animals and being outdoors.
Planning a 60 person birthday party - Jollibee theme. It’s a hassle but the grandparents seemed really disappointed when I suggested we not do anything big (first grandchild on both sides).
Between this and her baptism, no more parties until she’s 5!
@Mason
Jollibee theme?! Amazing
@Mason
We’re planning to do a baptism and 1st birthday combo!
@Mason
This is my plan too!!
@Mason
Can I go? We love Jollibee!
We did a staycation in town and I made her a little smash cake. It was great to have a quiet day, just the three of us.
We rented a pavilion at a local park and will keep it to our closest family and friends.

I love this idea but I am curious, what do you do in the event of the rain date? Do you lose the money you put in for the rental?

This is what we did for my girls first birthday. It was a lot of fun!
We’re celebrating soon too and I’m going to decorate the living room with banners and balloons and invite grandparents and aunties down for party games (musical statues, bumps, pass the parcel) to play together. I’m going to do a rainbow food spread and I’m going to make a smash cake for her to have fun with at the end.
My idea is to keep it fun and casual but definitely a celebration
@Oaklan
ooh I love that rainbow food spread idea!
We are going to spend a week in Mexico! A little unconventional for a first birthday but I work in the travel industry and my husband has some PTO to burn!
My son’s birthday is the day before mine and we turned 1 and 25 the same year so my sister and I took him to Disney World for two days to celebrate appropriately hahah. Then we had a family party for him when we got back. I have to be fair with my daughter too though so we are planning another two day trip for her first birthday and will do a family party as well! It’s a fun memory for myself to celebrate my kids.
Zoo sounds so fun! We went to the zoo when our baby was like 2 months old and still loved it. We are planning to go ahead when he’s 1!
We’re just having a party with our friends and family! He may not remember it but we will, and so will all our loved ones!
Love the zoo idea!! Our local zoo is free but I’ll probably wait until the weather is a bit nicer to take LO because it’s been brutal lately (feeling like -20C with the wind chill).
Had a BBQ in the backyard. In Australia we BBQ, steaks & sausages & chicken wings. Lots of salad & kid-friendly foods.
None of my family bothered to show up, just as well my ex-husband had a big family.
I made a baby-friendly cake, we got Chinese food and went to the zoo! No guests. Celebrated and reflected on our first year together. I was worried she wouldn’t be interested in the zoo, but she had a blast!
We actually went to the zoo but he was a little grumpy so we didn’t stay for long (he had been sick). But besides that just a regular family gathering with a birthday cake.
We feel that people just go too much overboard with these parties when in all seriousness the child won’t get much of it. Many times it can be even too stressful.
