I’m just curious about what’s going on with my baby and if it’s normal or something I should let continue.
My baby just turned 3 months yesterday. He has always nursed to sleep, but lately, he needs a little extra bouncing afterward to get to sleep. Last night, my husband bounced him for a while, and once he seemed good, he placed him in his bassinet. Shortly after, my baby started to rustle a bit and coo/whine a little. No crying or screaming, just cooing with some whining mixed in. He didn’t seem distressed, so we let it happen. About 20 minutes later, he was suddenly sucking his binky and falling asleep.
So, basically, I’m wondering why he was cooing. Cooing is a positive sign, right? Is he self-soothing? I thought he was too young to do so… He does also suck his hand a LOT. Anyway, if he is doing this, should I just leave him be, or is he telling me he’s bothered?
Your baby’s cooing and whining as he settles in his bassinet is pretty normal. It might be a sign he’s starting to self-soothe, which is a good thing. As long as he’s not distressed and eventually falls asleep, it’s usually okay to let him settle on his own.
It sounds like your baby is starting to explore self-soothing behaviors, which is a positive sign! Cooing at this age is often a way for babies to communicate and self-regulate. As long as he isn’t distressed, it’s usually okay to let him be. Trust your instincts and keep an eye on him.
Your baby is likely self-soothing. This is a great development! Cooing and sucking on hands are normal signs of this. Let them continue exploring this new skill.
